At the turn of the last century one of the original applications for enamelled lava was permanent outdoor signage elements. When the Michelin company won the concession to map France, they chose enameled lava for the signs they installed throughout villages & towns primarily due to the materials’ excellent resistance qualities at the side of busy roads out in all weathers yet needing no maintenance. The original art nouveau world famous "Metro" signs were also made of enamelled lava. These signs are still in use today, unaltered & still functional, as part of the French heritage.

Today, as printing techniques have developed, the printing on enamelled lava has evolved allowing crisp clear images, maps & drawings at a quality very close to that of a high quality printer. All signage elements on enamelled lava have a 10 year warranty of color resistance & a life span of at least 30 years. The material’s unique versatility offers virtually no limitations in shape & design other than the vision of the designer.

Signs in enamelled lava can be found in many famous sites around the world. The material has been approved by archaeologists worldwide & has been qualified in numerous Unesco heritage sites. It has also been selected by many architects for elegant creations. Printing on enamelled lava is achieved with a serigraphic-type process using silk screens & special fire resistant enamels. The production process is entirely manual, making each slab a small piece of art. This same technique can also be applied to Gres (artificial stoneware), Glass and Aluminium, offering high quality signage systems for indoor & outdoor applications.
